18.11.2010You can test the coolant for coolant concentration, reserve alkalinity (green) and pH levels. What is coolant pH? PH is the measure of the degree of acidity or alkalinity in a coolant. The acidity decreases and the alkalinity increases as the pH goes from 0 to 14. The recommended pH range for coolants is on the slight alkaline side, from 7.5 to 11. Anything at

This video gives you a complete overview of the tools you will need to make your coolant maintenance easier. Note: Be sure to maintain your coolant mixture to keep the coolant concentrate at acceptable levels. Improperly maintained coolant mixtures can allow machine components to rust. Rust damage is not covered by your warranty.

03.01.2021Edit: to answer your question, the acidic ph is not from your coolant to water ratio. Pure water is 7 and coolants are higher (numerically) so if anything you should be higher than 7 as long as you had SOME fresh coolant in it. so adding more coolant concentrate (increasing my ratio) won't increase my ph level (decrease my acid level) then ripcord

The water itself—which makes up roughly 90 percent of any cutting fluid—is also important. If you're not willing to drink your tap water, neither is your machine.

14.08.2019My question of if the target is 3.5%, can the final mix vary between, say, 3.2% to 3.8% was to learn how tightly constrained the control system must be (i.e. - does it have to be essentially dead-on with very tight control of coolant %, or is a fair amount of slop acceptable). How can the desired goal be met?

Proper coolant pH operating ranges are specified by the manufacturer. Within the proper pH range, corrosion and bacterial growth are minimized. For most coolants this range is 8.5 to 9.2. Drops below the recommended limit may be a symptom of a bigger problem and are most likely caused by excessive bacteria or excessive diluting.

04.05.2007Sodium bicarbonate will typically raise the pH to less than 8.5. It 'sounds' (?) like you are assuming that 10.5 is the ideal pH because that is the pH of concentrated antifreeze. I think that a pH of 9 should be fine. Depending on what type of water you mixed with the antifreeze you run the risk of elevating the pH too high using sodium hydroxide.

What is Coolant Management? Coolant management is a service which determines the health of your metalworking fluids. Coolant monitoring checks include; dilution, pH, temperature, tramp oil and general condition. These checks should be taken and results recorded monthly at a minimum, and a historical record of results should be kept for five years.

10.03.2020Fresh coolant has a pH level typically just above 8. A neutral fluid has a pH of 7. It is critical to verify that the truck coolant has not dropped below 7, becoming acidic due to a gasket leak or EGR cooler failure. Acidic coolant will lead to cooling system damage. Acidic coolant should be immediately drained and replaced with fresh TRP ELC.

Some machines can even deliver higher coolant pressures, up to 150 bar (2176 psi), for demanding operations and materials. The benefits can be great for both turning and drilling operations, however it is worth noting:

So a refractometer reading of 5 multiplied by an index of 1.75 = 8.75% concentration. This is most critical with solutions designed to be run at lower concentrations which have high indexes.
